Situated in Bihar, Bodh Gaya is the place where young prince Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment (Nirvana) and became Buddha. After meditating for around 49 hours under a Bodhi tree (Ficusreligiosa), he got the insight for the answers that he had been seeking for. It is believed that after around 250 years, Emperor Ashoka established the Mahabodhi temple there. Now Bodh Gaya has been developed as a major pilgrimage site and attracts large number of pilgrims each year.
